StepWord is an independent work created on its own. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or in any way connected to any other word game, its publisher, company, or trademark owner. All product names, trademarks and registered trademarks are the property of their respective owners.

Built on the public-domain word ladder

StepWord’s gameplay is the classic word ladder (also known as “Doublets”), a puzzle mechanic invented by Lewis Carroll in 1877 and in the public domain for well over a century. You change one letter at a time to turn a start word into an end word, with every step a real word. This mechanic is fundamentally different from guessing a single hidden word with per-letter color feedback; StepWord does not use that mechanic or its visual style.

StepWord’s name, logo, color scheme (antique bronze), chain-link feedback, changed-letter underline, and link-based share format are its own original expression. It does not use a green/yellow/gray colored tile grid, and its spoiler-free share is a chain of links and a step count — never a grid of colored squares.

Word list

StepWord’s dictionary is derived from ENABLE, an open, public-domain English word list, filtered to remove offensive and sensitive terms. We do not use, copy, or reproduce any other game’s answer list or daily word sequence; every daily start/end pair is generated by our own deterministic algorithm over the public-domain word graph.

How puzzles are made

Each daily puzzle is produced by a deterministic algorithm seeded from the calendar date (UTC). Puzzles are not generated by an artificial-intelligence or large-language model, and they are not downloaded from a server — your browser computes the same puzzle everyone else gets that day.
